The Seminar on scientific research and identification of Buddhist cultural relics, sponsored by the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo and sponsored by the Buddhist statue Research Institute of Mount Putuo, was held recently at the Putuo Mountain College of Buddhist College of China. Liu Xuesen, president of Huabi Group, was invited to attend the seminar and give a keynote speech. He conducted in-depth analysis and exchanges with experts and scholars in other related fields on how to conduct scientific research on Buddhist cultural relics and how to use judicial evidence to identify and protect cultural relics.

The traditional method of cultural relics identification, commonly known as "eye identification", is to judge the authenticity, age and value of cultural relics by means of observation and comparison of cultural relics, depending on people's vision, antennae, smell and sensation. However, under the influence or interference of many subjective and artificial factors, the appraisal results are often uncertain, and some even become tools for some people to cheat and make profits for themselves, which hinders the protection and inheritance of excellent traditional culture. Therefore, experts appeal that while strengthening the traditional methods of cultural relics identification, it is imperative to explore the way of scientific and technological identification.

   

It is under this background that "seminar on scientific research and physical evidence identification of Buddhist relics" was held. At the seminar, renowned experts and scholars from the archaeological, cultural and exposition circles, cultural conservation circles and judicial appraisal circles in the Mainland made progress on the application of new technologies, the research of new materials and the experience of combining traditional appraisal with scientific research of Buddhist cultural relics, the problems existing in the work of cultural relics appraisal and the methods to solve them. Through extensive exchanges and discussions, this paper analyses the scientific means and development trend of Cultural Relics Identification under the new situation, and reveals the important significance of cultural relics protection in the fields of nationality, history, scientific research, religion and so on.

Modern scientific and technological appraisal methods mainly use modern science and technology and instruments to carry out scientific data analysis of cultural relics. As early as the beginning of the last century, western countries have established a scientific appraisal system and methods. Experts believe that with the wide application of modern science and technology in the field of cultural relics identification, scientific detection has become an inevitable choice for Chinese cultural relics identification. The combination of modern science and technology and traditional methods will greatly improve the accuracy of cultural relics identification, provide a sharp weapon for the collection of cultural relics, and promote the protection and inheritance of Buddhist culture.
